Welcome to Tom and Marge’s new blog! If you were a reader of our previous blog, you probably noticed that we haven’t updated it in almost a year, and hadn’t been updating it regularly well before that. We have a lot of excuses, some good, some not so good. The not so good ones are that we were busy and just didn’t have the time. The less good but probably more true excuses are that updating the blog got boring and tiresome, and, with our business, we couldn’t always say what we wanted to say.
It got boring for us for a couple of reasons. First, after five or so years in Belize, what used to seem new and different and exciting was just part of everyday life. Our friends and family in the US told us that our experiences were still interesting to them both because they were happening to us and because they were different from life in the US, but that really wasn’t enough incentive for us to spend the time writing about them. For a while we tried documenting our guests’ stays, but after a while they all started to sound the same too, and even though we know that every guest’s vacation is new and exciting to that guest, to us it became very repetitive. But we couldn’t really say that on the blog: “We had a family from middle America stay with us, but we’re not going to write about them because they were boring.” And they might even think we meant it, after having Tom fall asleep at the dinner table in front of them.
Which brings me to the second reason we’re starting a new blog, which is that it became very frustrating not to say what I/we really thought about something. What’s a blog without a good rant now and then? But knowing that prospective guests were going to look at the blog, we couldn’t really say things that could be construed as offensive, especially when the things we wanted to say frequently touched on potentially guest-sensitive topics, such as guest and prospective guest behavior, religion, politics, media, education, food, commercialism, real estate in Belize…you get the picture. Rants to follow. And some of you may even be offended, but if you know Tom and me, you probably already know how we feel, and like us even if you don’t entirely agree. And if you don’t know us and find us offensive, at least we won’t be losing your business because you think we’re assholes. Oh, yeah, and I might even use a bad word now and then, which I couldn’t do in a blog written for public consumption.
That said, you may notice as these blog postings continue, that I am not mentioning the name of our lodging business. Nor will I mention the name of the company for which we are now working. We don’t want searches of those to names to lead to this blog and cause prospective customers of either business to turn away because of ideological differences. However, if you find this blog, don’t know us but know what businesses I’m talking about, and find us offensive, rest assured that the lodging business is now being run by a very nice and inoffensive local couple, and the owners of the company we’re now working for are also quite nice and inoffensive. That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.
